Damage To Home Or Business
When To Call An Electrician
- Your circuit breaker or fusebox is damaged
- You have wiring damage inside your home
- You see standing water near wires or appliances. Stay away from the water!
You have overhead service, and
- The weatherhead (the point at which AEP’s line from the pole attaches to your home or business) is damaged, or,
- There is damage to the vertical pipe (conduit) that encloses the AEP line between the weatherhead and the meter.
Why Call An Electrician
When the power goes out, your problem may be with the building's electrical system
especially if only part of the electricity is out in the building. Be sure to check
and reset your circuit breaker or fuses.
When AEP Is Responsible For Repair
- There are downed poles and wires.
- The
electric meter is damaged.
- The wires that go from the transformer to the weatherhead are damaged.
Other Types of Damage to Your Home
AEP is not legally responsible for damages caused by natural occurrences like storms or normal equipment failures. However, your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance may cover
these losses. We recommend checking with your insurance agent.
If you believe AEP caused a loss that you should be compensated for, please file a claim.

Weatherhead
The weatherhead is attached atop the metal conduit (pipe) or cable that rises from
the meter box and typically continues above the roofs edge to provide safe clearance.
The weatherhead, service entrance cable, riser pipe and meter box, together, comprise
the "electric service entrance".

Meter And Meter Box
An electric meter is a device that measures (in kilowatt-hours) the amount of electricity a home or business uses.
A meter box is the protective housing for the electric meter. It contains a socket into which the electric meter is plugged.
